Newcastle's Pasha Bulker Back to Stay

Friday May 29, 2009

The Pasha Bulker is here to stay in Newcastle in miniature form, after a sculpture was positioned at the top of the Shortland Esplanade seawall.

The Newcastle sculpture that stands two-metres high and six-metres long will be officially unveiled on Friday 5 June to mark the anniversary of when Pasha Bulker ran aground on Friday 8 June in 2007 during that long weekend's storm.

To get the Pasha Bulker sculpture, titled 'Grounded', into its current position, a crane lifted it from a truck onto the ground where it was bolted into place.

Designed using the original section of 22mm plate steel from the ship's rudder, Sydney-based artist John Petrie was selected to create the sculpture and was chosen from 12 Australian artists by a Newcastle art advisory committee.

Newcastle City Council commissioned the sculpture and received a $20,000 NSW Government grant as well as support from OneSteel.
