Newcastle's Raging Waves

Wednesday April 1, 2009

Newcastle beaches have been closed as a result of the tumultuous weather early in the week. Huge waves nearly the size of the 2007 storm when the famous Pasha Bulker became stranded.

Ben Horvath from Coastal Watch said this morning he expected that large swells the height of five metres would hit the region early today.

Newcastle Port Corporation said several overnight ships stayed well off shore due to the raging swells.

"We have 19 vessels offshore and we have advised them of the weather conditions and they have moved out to sea" corporation spokesman Keith Powell told the Newcastle Herald.
