Well-Established Winery Near Newcastle Faces Uncertain Future

Renowned Hunter Valley Rosemount Estate winery near Newcastle at Denman is uncertain about its future after owner Foster's Group revealed plans to let the winery go as part of its $4billion wine division.

The spokesman of the winery told the Newcastle Herald that workers have been notified of the group's decision however the winery also has contracts with other vineyards to process grapes.

While the Hunter Valley vineyard may be closed down, the spokesman said it may take time and it could be about 2010 before any decision was made. The spokesman also said that employees could receive full entitlements.

After being founded 40 years ago, in 2001 the Oatley family merged the winery with Southcorp Wines, a deal worth $1.49billion. Rosemount Winery in the Newcastle region then was bought in 2005 by Foster';s for $3.2billion.
