Sharks Widespread in Newcastle and Hunter Region

Thursday March 5, 2009

Residents in the Newcastle and greater Hunter Valley region are photographing many sharks off its coast.

George Trinkler, a fisherman and fishing photographer from Hunter Valley's Raymond Terrace located just out of Newcastle recently photographed a 2.5 metre white pointer shark 5km from Birubi Point.

"Big fish chase little fish, it's a law of nature, and the north end of Stockton [in Newcastle] is one of the great white pointer hunting grounds," Mr Trinkler told the Newcastle Herald.

"There are times at Stockton when the sharks outnumber the swimmers and they're sharing the same stretch of water."

Mr Trinkler believes that the rise of white pointers in the area may be because they love eating Australian salmon, which had grown dramatically in number in the area since a netting ban began north of Broken Bay in 2001.
