Newcastle Show Has High Attendance for Yet Another Year
Monday March 30, 2009
Newcastle Show was a success but could have benefited from more local industry support said agricultural official.
The Newcastle Show was a success for another year with a 60,000 attendance to equal last year's.
However Newcastle Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Association president Roger Geary said stall-holders had good turnovers and the show was a success but he would have liked to see he more support from the industry.
"When the association was formed in 1899, industries in the region insisted on being part of it and having their name in the title," Mr Geary told the Newcastle Herald. "Over the years, they did support the show, but they haven't recently.
"I'm very disappointed, where are the big Hunter industries?
"I always said it would take three successive shows to get the show back on track [after it was cancelled in 2007] and we are now two-thirds of the way there.
"We just need to give industry a wake up call and get them back here."
Mr Geary believed that events such as the woodchop and campdraft and the Australian Defence Force's participation had stimulated more interest in the Newcastle show.
