Newcastle Jobs Cut and May be Given to Overseas Companies

Saturday March 28, 2009

About 200 jobs are under threat in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley after the Federal Government plans to introduce an overhaul of employment services contracts.

Not-for-profit-organisation Hunter Workways is one company that expects job cuts due to the Government';s expected decision to award two British companies most of the new employment services tender.

A staff member at another organisation, Wesley Uniting Employment, told the Newcastle Herald yesterday that staff were advised the organisation had missed out on contracts and that staff at its Hunter offices would be made redundant when the contracts expired.

"They've told us we have none of the business from the new contracts and human resources is looking into the process for redundancy," the worker who wished to remain unnamed said in the Newcastle Herald.

"This is the Government giving jobs to overseas companies instead of looking after its own," he said.

Meanwhile, BHP Billiton has axed 400 coal mining contract workers following the 1100 job losses at its Queensland operations announced earlier in the year.
