Near-drowned Man in Newcastle Unable to be Identified

A man who nearly drowned at Bar Beach in Newcastle yesterday is unable to be identified.

The man was swimming at Bar Beach, Newcastle, at 9:40am yesterday when a wave took him under the water and he failed to resurface.

Surf lifesavers rescued and performed CPR on him before he was taken by ambulance to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital and into its intensive care unit where he is in a coma.

He remains to be identified.

Believed to be the man's was a bag found on the Newcastle beach with a white T-shirt size XL/20 and a set of six keys with a 197 membership medallion with a Newcastle Workers Co-operative Club Ltd, and also a medallion with the Belmont 16ft Sailing Club.

Also in the bag was a pair of black-rimmed spectacles.

It has been estimated that he is around 45-55 years old, and he has a medium build and short black hair that is balding on the top. He was wearing black swim shorts.

Bar Beach Newcastle regulars have told police that they have seen him in the area before.
