PLANNING has begun on the $5 million solar thermal tower that will be built at the CSIRO's Newcastle centre.

The tower is one of three major projects to be created by the Newcastle-based Australian Solar Institute.

A crystalline silicon pilot line will be built at the University of NSW in Sydney and a research facility will be built at the Australian National University in Canberra.

The Australian Solar Institute will help researchers make solar energy more efficient and affordable for Australian homes.
