NEWCASTLE District Bowler of the Year Andrew Smith has been forced out of the Newcastle side to play ACT in Canberra this weekend with a knee injury.

The Lambton player is suffering from prepatellar bursitis sustained in a freak mishap just before Christmas when he was kneeling down to help his two-year-old son, Andrew jnr, change into his swimmers and popped a sack of fluid in front of his kneecap.

He has been replaced by Steve Wilson, who comes into the side as second for Terry Antram (Nelson Bay).

Selectors have also been forced to find replacements for David Quigley (Alder Park), who is best man at a wedding in Melbourne, and David Govan (Toronto Workers), who is unavailable because of work commitments.

Howard Smith (Kahibah) takes over from Quigley as second for Jason Stokes (Raymond Terrace).

Chad Sutton (Lambton) comes in as second Shane Evans moves to third for his Raymond Terrace clubmate Lennon Scott in place of Govan.

? Charlie Cunningham, Richard Cox and Kevin Gibbons claimed the Cyril Kemp Two Bowls Triples at Kahibah on Sunday.

They scored two shots on the final end to beat Terry Cousins, Hans Vanderpoel and Phil Garry 20-19 in a fluctuating encounter in which the scores were level five times.

? Newcastle District Bowling Association will add a ninth section to the No.7-grade pennant competition this year after receiving five additional nominations.

Heaton Birmingham Gardens No.2 have nominated a second side, while Beresfield, Belmont, Boolaroo and Cardiff have also nominated sides to play in the section.

But the NDBA still has vacancies for three more teams in the grade to alleviate byes.

Meanwhile, Belmont will field a side in section one of the No.3-grade midweek pennants, and Redhead No.2 will replace the bye in section three in No.5 grade midweek.

The home-and-away draws will be distributed to club delegates at their monthly meeting tomorrow.

? Raymond Terrace will host the Wheelchair Sports NSW Multi-Disability state singles and pairs from February 3 to 8.

The championships are for bowlers with a physical disability who are members of a Bowls NSW or NSW Women's Bowling Association affiliated club.

Royal NSW Bowling Association helps run the titles.

? Nominations close today for the Newcastle District fours championship to begin on January 31.

Entries close next Wednesday for the State President's pairs championship, which starts on February 14.
