NEWCASTLE are languishing in seventh place after a disappointing weekend round of matches in the State Women's Hockey League at Broadmeadow.

Fourth-placed Illawarra added to the pain when they overcame the home side 2-1 to take the competition points and the Steel Cities Trophy.

Only the top two go into the final. Newcastle would need a miracle in the last round of five matches, to be played in Tamworth next month, to climb that high.

Newcastle's lone goal against Illawarra went to Kasey Cocking from the penalty spot.

The loss came after Newcastle scored their first win of the weekend when Ebony Barber and Alison Bruce scored in a 2-0 victory over Eastern Districts.

On Saturday, Newcastle scored a 1-all draw against defending champions Bathurst and lost 3-1 to South Coast.
